Snakes

Don’t Provide Free Room and Board To Snakes!

Mice and other small animals are a snake’s natural source of food. When the weather turns cold and these animals move indoors, snakes naturally follow them. They love to hide in small nooks and crannies of your house or building so it’s not uncommon for snakes to get into crawl spaces, basements, and garages where it’s cool and damp and, particularly, where food is available.

Most snakes in Indiana are not poisonous (venomous). Nevertheless, it’s still a good idea to use caution when dealing with any snake because many will bite when threatened. Although Indiana snakes are not typically aggressive, none like to be disturbed so if you see a snake in your building, it’s best to call in a professional.

Snakes removal ban be difficult because snakes are good at squeezing into small spaces. They will quickly move from space to space if they feel threatened or if their source of food goes away. This is why you might see a snake in an area one minute but find it gone the next. This makes it tricky to trap and remove them. It’s not uncommon for snakes to live undetected for weeks or even months in your home or building. As long as they have a source of food, they’re generally content to hole up and reside quietly in your house or building.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Indiana has three types of poisonous snakes: the Northern Copperhead, the Timber Rattlesnake and the Massasauga Rattlesnake. Northern Water Snakes can easily be confused with Water Moccasins because their markings are similar but typically Water Moccasins are not found in Indiana. There are many types of non-poisonous snakes in Indiana: Garter Snakes, Queen Snakes, Brown Snakes, Black Rat Snakes and several types of Water Snakes, to name a few.
